Abstract: In this work, we study the effectiveness of a method called Spoken Tutorial, which is a candidate technique for self-learning. The performance of college students who self-learned Java through the Spoken Tutorial method is found to be better than that of conventional learners. Although the method evaluated in this work helps both genders, females seem to benefit more through self-learning workshop based approach. Selflearners found to be more interested in ease of learning and the availability of content, while classroom learners focused more on evaluation. All of these findings are in agreement with the literature. Although the proposed method seems to be effective to a restricted class of topics, the benefits can still be enormous and suitable for flipped classrooms, MOOC, etc. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
